Game week! Mark Helfrich met the media after today’s practice, and offered some news on the 2013 depth chart as preparations began for the first game next Saturday at Autzen Stadium versus Nicholls (two Ls, no “State,” officially). The full depth chart comes out on Monday but Andy McNamara of goducks.com had some juicy tidbits in his practice report.

Push, shove and get better: Karrington Armstrong and Hamani Stevens lock up during a drill in fall camp. The two have waged a battle for the starting guard spots along with Everett Benyard III. All three will play and contribute (goducks.com photo, Eric Evans)

Alejandro Maldonado will replace the departed Jackson Rice at punter. Jeff Lockie is #2 quarterback, although that competition is close. Helfrich said Thomas Tyner, tight end Johnny Mundt, drop end Torrodney Prevot and linebacker Tyrell Robinson are among true freshmen he expects to contribute right away.

The competition for field goal kicker continues between true freshman Matt Wogan and senior Alejandro Maldonado, and they may be platooned with Wogan attempting the longer kicks. Wogan hasn’t be designated for redshirt. He’ll play.

According to Will Rubin of Duck Territory via Twitter, Helfrich indicated that receiver Darren Carrington, offensive lineman Elijah George, quarterback Damion Hobbs, running back Kani Benoit, defensive back Tyree Robinson, offensive lineman Jake Pisarcik are redshirting this year. “Redshirts for now” include players like Devon Allen, Danny Mattingly, Doug Brenner and Cameron Hunt.

As always, the redshirt is mythical, and doesn’t have any true eligibility meaning until a player completes a year without playing in a game.

McNamara added that Oshay Dunmore, a 6-2, 207-lb. redshirt freshman from 4A Newport High in Newport, Oregon, has been moved from safety to linebacker. Dunmore was a quarterback and hard-hitting safety in high school, a Parade All-American and first team All-State as a defensive back, 2nd team as a qb.

The fact that Benoit has been designated for redshirt and Tyner has been picked to play right away of course suggests that Tyner’s injury is not as serious as initially feared by some fans. Pharoah Brown, however, remains in a boot, according to an Oregon Daily Emerald Twitter posting.
