On Christmas Day, Gatorade launched their new marketing campaign…and it is already proving to be a good one.
Celebrating a half-century in the business, their new commercial spot (conveniently titled “50”) showcases a number of iconic sports moments and plenty of the world’s most recognizable athletes. In the ad, University of Florida football players count off fifty pushups as a clip flashes by for each number.
Included…Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Usain Bolt and Serena Williams.
Of the fifty clips, only four were dedicated to the game of baseball, and that’s not including onetime minor leaguer Jordan who, by himself, was shown four times. But I get it. Gatorade is more associated with sports like basketball and football (and rest assured, the spot included football…lots of football) than baseball, but shouldn’t there be more than just a shot of Derek Jeter, a reference to the number of New York Yankees World Series victories, a flag bearing Jackie Robinson’s “42” and, of all people, Bryce Harper?
Really, Gatorade? That’s it?!?
No shots of baseball players surprising a teammate after the game with a Gatorade bath. No clips of some of the game’s past Gatorade players of the year? Ludicrous.
But, all that aside, I do like the spot. I really, really do.
