The New York Yankees first full-squad workout isn't until February 20, but that didn't stop their team captain from suiting up on Monday.
Derek Jeter, who was limited to just 17 games last season because of injuries, was in the batting cage and on the field fielding grounders in front of a handful of coaches at the Yankees minor-league complex in Tampa.
“Everything’s good, man, so far, knock on wood,” Jeter said. “Everything’s been fine.”
Jeter took 39 swings during the impromptu batting practice and fielded 34 ground balls at shortstop. All in all, a pretty light day at the office for Jeter, who turns 40 in June. But, considering Jeter hasn't played regularly since the 2012 Playoffs…I'm pretty sure the Bronx Bombers will take what they can get from the guy.
“I remember when I turned 35, everyone said, ‘That’s it, he can’t play anymore, end of my career.' So it’s really nothing different," Jeter added. “Eventually, somebody’s going to be right, you know what I mean? You’re going to run out of numbers.”
Speaking of numbers, the 13-time All-Star, enters 2014 ninth all-time in hits with 3316…just three shy of tying Hall of Famer Paul Molitor. And should the shortstop return to his old self, he'll have no problem surpassing the likes of Carl Yastrzemski (3419) and Honus Wagner (3435) on the all-time list.
