Kolten Wong has signed a new contract extension with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Here are the details:
- 25.5M total
- 5 year guarantee
- 5.1M yearly salary
- Starts this season (2016)
- Includes option for 6th year (2021 | 12M)
- Has 1M buyout in 6th year if option isn’t exercised
More from MLB Trade Rumors:
Because it begins with the 2016 campaign, the deal will give St. Louis control over two free agent seasons — the latter via option — in addition to covering Wong’s entire arbitration eligibility. He’ll be under team control through his age-30 campaign. Wong had entered the spring with just over two years of MLB service under his belt and had yet to qualify for arbitration.

Koleten Wong has played in 295 MLB games for the St. Louis Cardinals and posted a 3.9 total WAR. He finished 3rd in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2014 and had his best offensive season in 2015 (.262/.321/.386).
Wong is known to be a hard worker and someone who deeply cares about winning. To lock him up for the next 5 years at a very reasonable amount seems like a low-risk play for the Cardinals.
Congrats, Mr. Wong.
