Theo pulled some magic by getting Scutaro to agree to a 2-year deal at $5 million per year with a team/player option for a third year. If the Red Sox pick up the option for the third year they would pay him $6 million for the year. If the Sox do not pick up his option and Scutaro exercises it he will make $3 million in his third year, or he could walk away with a $1.5 million buyout. Scutaro was also given a $1 million signing bonus. Theo Epstein used the Pedroia to short news to lower the demand and price on Scutaro and get him to accept a 2-year deal. If Iglesias develops on schedule the Sox can decline the option on Scutaro and if Iglesias is not ready they can keep Scutaro. You have to give Theo high marks on this deal. Gonzalez was a fan favorite but Scutaro is an offensive upgrade.
