I got invited earlier this summer to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:
The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.
We are honored to be asked to vote on this award alongside such great bloggers like Patrick Johnson from Big East Coast Bias, the guys from the Upset Blog, the Navy Bird Dog, and Kevin McGuire of the National Football Examiner (and virtually every other college football blog on the internet) among others. Here is what the group came up with for week four as well as the cumulative results.
Here is my week four ballot based on game performance and remember, this is a week by week voting. We are not voting on their cumulative play for the entire season. Points are given each week and the one with the most points at the end of the year will get the award.
1. Lance Dunbar, RB, North Texas
Wait a minute…North Texas won a game? And they beat someone from the Big Ten? Holy crap! Lance Dunbar was a big reason why as he ran for 127 yards on the ground and caught 7 passes for 152 yards and a TD.
2. Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
Temple shocked Maryland 38-7 and Bernard Pierce was a big reason why as he accounted for 149 yards on the ground and ran for 5 Touchdowns!
3. Austin Davis, QB, Southern Miss
Any time a Conference USA team beats an ACC team you have to take note. Southern Miss upended Virginia this weekend by the score of 30-24 and Davis was a big reason why. Davis completed 27 of 41 for 313 yards and 3 TD against 0 INTs.
4. Blaine Gautier, QB, Louisiana
Let’s hear it for the Ragin’ Cajuns pulling off the big upset of FIU. FIU was fresh off of wins against Louisville and UCF so not many were expecting this. Phil Steele picked these Cajuns to come in dead last in the Sun Belt (after Western Kentucky and North Texas) but QB Blaine Gautier led the charge on Saturday going 14/26 for 221 yds and 3 TD in the upset. Former Miss State assistant coach Mark Hudspeth is off to a 3-1 start with this team (the loss was to Okie State).
5. Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii
Moniz would be a lot higher after a performance like he had this week but it was against UC Davis. Moniz tossed 4 first quarter TDs to lead Hawaii to a 28-0 first quarter margin. Then he threw three more in the second quarter and Hawaii was up 49-0 going into the half. Moniz finished 30/40 for 424 yards and 7 TD against 0 INT. Oh yeah, he also rushed for 50 yards on 5 carries.
