Another week, another heart breaking loss for the Lions (if you were able to piece together the heart from last week’s game). Hey, at least the Lions are 8-1 against the spread this year!
On a chilly, Rayner day in Buffalo, the Lions weren’t able to get their offense jumpstarted against one of the weaker defenses in the NFL until it was too late. Penalties, a lack of a running game, dropped passes and missed tackles on defense cost the Lions the most against the 0-8 Bills.
Shaun Hill, starting in place of the injured Matthew Stafford, was rusty early due to the fact he’s playing with a cast on his left arm and hasn’t seen the field since he broke that left forearm, but he shook the cobwebs and finished 29-50 for 323 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His numbers would’ve been better if the Lions hadn’t dropped several passes (there were 5-6 of them that I can think of off the top of my head). Unfortunately, he didn’t make his best decision of the day on the most important play of the game when he attemped to lob one to Brandon Pettigrew in the back of the end zone on a two-point conversion with the Lions trailing 14-12 with just 14 seconds left on the game clock. The ball was overthrown and sailed out of the back of the end zone, sealing the Lions fate.
The Bills came into the game allowing the most rushing yards per game in the NFL (170+), but the Lions only managed to rack up 76 on 26 attempts, putting added pressure on the passing game that did struggle early.
The Lions are 2-7 and head to Dallas to take on the rejuvenated Jason Garrett led Cowboys, who just beat up on the Giants, who many were calling the best team in the NFC earlier this week. Losing to Jon Kitna and Roy Williams will only be most fitting for the Lions. I fully expect Detroit to be 2-8 heading into the short week, Thanksgiving Day game against Tom Brady and the Patriots. *Sigh*
