The Lions struck Golden Tate on the second day of NFL free agency, signing the soon-to-be 26-year-old, fifth-year wide receiver to a five-year, $31.5 ($13.25 guaranteed) deal. Tate was widely considered the third-best wide receiver available in free agency, behind Hakeem Nicks and Eric Decker… (So maybe his name should be Bronze Tate, amirite??)
Seriously, Tate is a fine signing by the Lions. Tate will play both inside and outside, complementing the best wide receiver in football, and he wants to return kicks. He might be short, not the fastest, a bit immature, and a Golden Domer, but he's got good hands and is solid after the catch. He's going to make the Lions better.
Tate said all the right things during his first press conference, speaking highly of Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Bill Ford Jr. and the city of Detroit. He even laid in bed last night watching Lions highlights.
Welcome to Detroit, Tate.
