DETROIT- The Detroit Lions have pushed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers aside as far as being the most snakebit team in the NFL. Once known as the team that let Bo Jackson go, lost 26 games in a row and completing the first winless season in 1976 at 0-14, the Bucs have won a Super Bowl in 2002 and after a relatively normal down time seem to be on the upturn with QB Jameis Winston and company.
Detroit never fully recovered from the retirement of Barry Sanders in his prime, and now MEGATRON, Calvin Johnson, has done it to the Lions AGAIN. Ala Sanders, Calvin Johnson is retiring just when the Lions are putting the losingest period in franchise history behind them.
Detroit pushed Tampa Bay aside with its 0-16 season, now considered the worst season in NFL history. The 1976 Bucs had no free agency, had to pick players from the bottom of other NFL rosters, while Detroit as a modern team had every opportunity to win a game with Free Agency.
Competitive during the 80s and 90s, the Lions never recovered from losing Sanders and in spite of two non losing seasons after he left, finished the next years with 2,3,5,6,5, and 3 wins before reaching 7 wins in 2007 and finishing in 3rd place giving hope to Detroit fans.
Instead, the Lions lost every single game in 2008, even with a double digit lead on the Bucs in the Silverdome, leaving a stain on one of the best D Line coaches, Rod Marinelli.
So relax Bucs fans, your not the worst Franchise ever. The Bucs have played in the conference championship 3 times, 1979, 1999, 2002, winning in 2002, losing by 9 points in ’79 and 5 points in 1999.
Detroit only Conference championship appearance was in 1991, a blowout loss to the Redskins. Detroit has not won a playoff In decades. Pick up your heads Bucs fans, were not the worst team in football, and Calvin Johnson’s retirement is a reminder of that on this…
