Dice-K: 8 IP, 119 pitches… Really!! (Too little, too late?)

The Red Sox got one back from the Jays today behind one of Dice-K’s deepest starts ever- 8 IP, and on only 119 pitches. (It seems as if he always hits the 100 pitch mark around the 5th inning, doesn’t it?) He did not come away with the win, however. Staked to a 4-1 lead going into the top of the 6th inning, he gave up a single, a double, a sac fly, and a home run (Overbay, again) to even up the score at 4 each. Bard came in for the 9th and 10th innings, and got through them on 13 pitches. Papelbon worked the 11th inning and got the win due to Jed Lowrie’s lead-off walk-off home run.

The Red Sox managed to get 10 hits off of 6 of the Jays’ pitching staff,  but they were almost all bunched up at the top of the order: Scutaro- 3/5, 2 runs; Drew- 2/3, 1 run; and Martinez- 3/5, 3 RBI’s. Beltre had 1 hit, and then Lowrie’s PH HR sealed the game. The home run made up for his error in the top of that frame, which fortunately yielded no more runs to the Jays, (but still…) Papi’s line is almost as ugly as yesterday’s pitching- 0/5, 8 LOB, ugh.

The Yankees won today leaving the Sox 6.5 GB, while the Rays are tied with the A’s 2-2, in the 6th inning of that game in Oakland. Is this win too little, too late? If the Rays lose their game, the Sox will still be 4.5 GB in the wild card chase. The White Sox are currently 8 GB in the wild card chase.
