Daisuke Matsuzaka took the mound this afternoon with the Portland Sea Dogs in his latest appearance in an attempt to get back to the major leagues after having Tommy John surgery in 2011. The Sea Dogs ended up winning 9-1.
I listened to the game at Seadogs.com and liked what I heard. If you are into minor league baseball at all, you should listen to and follow Mike Antonellis on twitter (@seadogsradio). Dice-K had a pitch limit of about 70. How did the Dice Man do? Pretty gosh darn well if you ask me. Dice-K pitched 4.2 innings, threw 74 pitches, gave up 3 Hs, 1 R, 2 BBs and 7 Ks. From the radio, it sounded like he was crisp and throwing pitches for strikes. Out of all 74 of his pitches, Dice-K threw 44 for strikes. Yes, he is facing AA hitters, so he should mow them all down, however he looked like he was consistent and had control of the strike zone.
When Dice-K left the mound in the 5th, he left to a standing ovation from the crowd. I’ll openly admit I am a long time Dice-K fan, however I am excited to have him back with the Red Sox and think he could be a huge asset to the team.
