It was just 1997 when the Boston Red Sox started the tradition of playing "Dirty Water" by The Standells after every win.
Seven years later, when the team won their first World Series in , it was hard to imagine a time that the song didn't accompany a Fenway Park victory.
“The cocky, punky attitude (the song) has, and the Red Sox being a bunch of scrappers and idiots," lead singer Dick Dodd told The Boston Globe in 2005, "it’s just great."
Friday, after a battle with cancer, Dodd died. He was 68.
But back to that iconic song. “Dirty Water”, even with it's "Boston, you're my home" refrain, isn't exactly the most glowing representation of the city considering it is littered with references to the Boston Strangler, pollution in the Charles River and “muggers and thieves.” A fun side note, at the time of the song's release…no one in the band had even been to the city.
"Dirty Water" reached number 11 on the Billboard pop chart back in 1966 and would end up being the band's biggest hit.
