Bills coach Chan Gailey, who inherited Maybin when he got the job last year, is getting sick of an allegedly talented player failing to produce on the field.
“Right now all it is is potential because he hasn’t shown it in practice or in games,” Gailey told ESPN’s Tim Graham. “He’s got to understand about pass-rush. He’s got to understand about leverage and changing direction and not running past the quarterback and all those little things that go into a great pass-rusher’s feel for beating an offensive tackle and getting to the passer. He’s got to be a better special-teams player. He’s got to be better versus the run.”
Although Gailey made clear that he’s not questioning Maybin’s work ethic, he does question why a player the previous staff thought so highly of coming out of college has done so little in the NFL.
“I don’t think I’ve lit very many fires,” Gailey said. “We might provide a spark, but he’s got to get his own fire going. . . . We tell him all the time how to get there. He’s got to do it. Talking’s over. You’ve got to go get it done.” (Profootballtalk.com)
Mind of Joe: You have to admire the way Gailey deals with the press. He’s obviously not like his predecessor (Dick Jauron), who would tip toe around anything remotely negative about a player. This is Maybin’s last chance.
He’s done absolutely nothing since being drafted by the Bills. Now, in fairness to Maybin, his first two years in the NFL have been marked by transition. He’s had two different defensive coordinators, two different schemes, two different defensive alignments and two different positions.
However, zero sacks in two years? Man, I don’t care what type of changes are occurring around you, because that’s just bad.
I did like how Gailey pretty much put the omen on Maybin to start doing, instead of just listening. I still think if you look at Maybin, he has the talent to at least do something in the NFL. When I say talent, I’m just talking about his body type, because he looks like a legit outside linebacker. The problem is that he’s just too raw. Maybe the addition of Dave Wannstedt will help, as a number of the Dallas Cowboys defensive players who he coached during their Super Bowl years were undrafted and late round draft picks (6 defensive starters were drafted beyond the 4th round). All I’m saying is that maybe he can help develop Maybin (Alright, I’m gasping for air here)
Now, it’s going to be tough for Maybin to even get on the field this year. For one, he’s listed as 4th on the outside linebacker depth chart, as Kelsay, Merriman and Moats are ahead of him. Not to mention, when healthy, Reggie Torbor and Antonio Coleman played ahead of him. Bottom line: Maybin has to make an impact at his first training camp session. He’s starting from the bottom of the barrel. Gailey doesn’t have any sort of loyalty towards Maybin, because he wasn’t involved in drafting him.
As for a prediction, I just don’t see Maybin making it out of training camp. The Bills have too many outside linebackers and you can’t pay your 4th string linebacker 5-million bucks a year. I assure you, I hope I’m wrong.
