Alright, it is time to prove or disprove my theory that the Brewers somehow, for whatever reason, lose a lot on Sundays and/or blow leads on Sundays…here is a summary of all of their Sunday games this year:
- 4/08: Win vs. Cubs, 9-4 (1-0)…held lead throughout
- 4/15: Loss at Cardinals, 2-10 (1-1)…had a 2-0 lead…for the first half of an inning
- 4/22: Win vs. Astros, 4-3 (2-1)…took a 4-0 lead into the 9th and gave up 3 runs in the 9th
- 4/29: Win at Astros, 3-1 (3-1)…had a 3-0 lead after three; gave up a run in the 8th
- 5/06: Win vs. Pirates, 6-4 (4-1)…Pirates tied with a 4-run 7th, before the Crew scored 2 in the 8th
- 5/13: Loss at Mets, 1-9 (4-2)…Crew trailed the entire game
- 5/20: Win vs. Twins, 6-5 (5-2)…Brewers came back from 5-2 deficit after 4
- 5/27: Loss at Padres, 0-3 (5-3)…Crew never ahead
- 6/03: Win vs. Marlins, 3-0 (6-3)…Crew led throughout
- 6/10: Win at Rangers, 9-6 (7-3)…the 22-hit game that the Brewers came from behind to win
- 6/17: Loss at Twins, 9-10 (7-4)…Crew trailed 0-5 and 6-9 before tying and blowing in the 9th
- 6/24: Loss vs. Royals, 3-4 (7-5)…Crew led 2-0 after 6, tied in the bottom of the 9th, before losing in the 11th
- 7/01: Loss at Cubs, 1-5 (7-6)…Brewers trailed all day
- 7/08: Loss at Nationals, 2-7 (7-7)…Crew held a 2-1 lead after 5½, only to give up 6 runs in the 6th
- 7/15: Win vs. Rockies, 4-3 (8-7)…Rockies tied in the 7th, and scored again in the 8th
- 7/22: Win vs. Giants, 7-5 (9-7)…’pen gave up a run in the 7th and 8th to make it close
- 7/29: Loss at Cardinals, 5-9 (9-8)…Brewers had a 5-4 lead before giving up 5 in the 8th
- 8/05: Loss vs. Phillies, 6-8 (9-9)…gave up 5 in the 9th to tie, and another 2 in the 11th to lose
…probably very close to what you might expect, but losing 6 of their last 8 Sunday games–and having had the lead or been tied after the halfway point in the game in 5 of those 6–tells me that the pen can’t handle Sunday day games.
