Do the Sox Need to Trade for a Pitcher

Going into last week’s series with the Rays, I figured that winning two of three games would be an accomplishment for the Sox. After Andrew Miller was knocked around and lost Friday night, I was apprehensive about Saturday, especially with John Lackey on the hill. But I am starting to change my mind about the man.

Despite his record, he is definitely trying. When Tampa scored 3 unearned runs off him in the first, he could have thrown in the towel, given his history with the Red Sox. But Lackey hung tough, pitching into the sixth as the team rallied for an eventual 9-5 victory, paving the way for a series win.

I’m not sure if the Sox need to trade for a starting pitcher. The lineup in Baltimore was Tim Wakefield, Kyle Weiland, and Miller. At the beginning of the year, none of the three were in the rotation and two were in Pawtucket.

The news on Clay Buchholz seems to be better; he may be throwing off a mound soon. If things go bad, however, a deal might help. Nick Cafardo’s Sunday page suggested that Jake Peavy might be available. Though Peavy’s stats this year have not been good (4-3 with a 5.27 ERA) he has won 106 games since coming up in ’02, including a 19-6 mark in San Diego in ’07, winning a Cy Young. He has been injury-prone the last two years, but he might be available for a lesser prospect.
