There’s been a little talk lately about Doc Rivers potentially coaching the 2016 Olympic team. It seems like a good idea, and Doc is into it… but with one catch.
Doc Rivers just said on NBC that “you’d have to say yes” to an offer to coach the Olympic team, but also endorsed Popovich.

Classy move by Doc, who has infinite respect for Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. Put your weight behind the big dog, but if he doesn’t take it, then show you’re open to doing it. I wouldn’t be shocked if, should he be offered the job, Doc calls Pop to make sure it’s ok. I can totally see Doc saying “I’ll say no if this has the potential to drive a wedge between us”.. or something similar to that. That just seems like a Doc move.
Coach K is probably done as coach, and it’s a job Pop wanted before it Krzyzewski got it. So if Pop still wants it, I can see Doc saying he’d join as an assistant. And if Pop and Jerry Colangelo still have an un-salvageable beef, then Doc will step in and take the job himself.
Again… classy move by Doc.
