Though the status of Kelvim Escobar remains up in the air, it does appear for now that he will return sooner rather than later, which all but guarantees the Angels will not make a deal for a starting pitcher in Spring Training.
Based on recent comments from Mike Scioscia, it is evident that the Angels will enter 2009 with Dustin Moseley in the fifth spot of the rotation. Nick Adenhart and Anthony Ortega, among others, will battle Moseley for the rotation spot in Spring Training, but whoever comes out on top will likely just be keeping Escobar’s seat warm until he returns.
That is good news for Angels fans. A return to the rotation by Escobar, arguably the Angels most talented pitcher, immediately and emphatically thrusts the Angels into the very top tier of Major League teams; and would give the Angels three prolific power arms heading into the 2009 postseason. That is, of course, assuming the Angels make it that far.
