Stan McNeal of Fox Sports had a nice piece on Kolten Wong yesterday.
His goals for 2015-
- Hit .300 or more (.249 in ’14)
- Steal more than 20 bases (20 in ’14)
- 15 or more home runs (12 regular season | 3 postseason)
- Move into leadoff spot
He had 7 extra base hits in the ’14 postseason (8 games played) and his confidence is on the uptick, something he struggled with in during the regular season:
“I’m going to come in confident in myself and not worry about the what-ifs anymore,” he said. “I know I can play at this level. It’s time for me to fully buy into that I’m a big-league player.”
Freaking love this.
While much of the off season conversation has centered around the pitching staff and Jason Heyward, Wong, who finished 3rd in NL Rookie of the Year voting, could be one of the most important pieces in the Cardinals success for ’15.
His power, speed and defense make him a dangerous weapon in a lineup that needs more danger from the position players. All those goals above? They’re attainable.
And if they’re attainable, then the Cardinals have an All-Star player @ 2B.
There’s no big a-ha moment on this post. Just that when Tony Rizzo is popping off about the Cubs young talent and how the Cubbies are going to take the NL Central, it’s good to remember that the Cards still have some young talent too.
Ones with postseason experience.
