The Goon Squad Classic II has been cancelled.
The second-annual charity game organized by Donté Greene was set to tip-off tomorrow evening at Cosumnes River College. However, the former Kings forward and his Circle of Success foundation received word from the NBA that players would face heavy penalties for their participation.
“Just got word from NBA (league) office,” said Greene in a series of tweets, informing fans of the news. “(Due) to stipulations in the new CBA the charity game has been canceled. Any players who play without prior league approval face suspension and fines. We are saddened by this news and apologize for any inconvience this may cause.”
An organizer with the event has told Cowbell Kingdom they are working to provide full refunds for those who bought tickets. They’re also hoping to arrange a free meet-and-greet with players outside of Blush Ultra Lounge in Downtown Sacramento. An after-party was planned at the nightclub.
Kings starting point guard Isaiah Thomas was planning to play in Greene’s game. From his youth basketball camp in Rocklin, Thomas told Cowbell Kingdom Thursday afternoon he was looking forward to the event.
“Those types of games are always fun for the fans that come out and support,” Thomas said. “I mean that’s what it’s basically for – to put on a show for the fans and have fun and to interact with other NBA players who are going to be there, so I can’t wait for tomorrow night.”
