Felix Doubront took the mound for the Sox in hopes of putting them back in the right direction. Felix didn’t go as long in the game as I would have liked, but he did his job and along with the bats was able to get a win. Gonzo didn’t get the HR he guaranteed, but Dubi wouldn’t need it.
The Sox bats got started early. They scored a single run in each of the first 3 innings. In the first, Cody Ross walked in a run to get the first run. Sox 1-0. In the 2nd, Marlon Byrd hit his first HR as a member of the Red Sox. Sox 2-0. In the 3rd, Cody Ross hit a solo HR as well. Sox 3-0. The Sox bats cooled down for a wee bit and Matt Moore really seemed to settle down. However, in the 8th Cody Ross would continue his fantastic night at the plate. Cody Ross hit a 2 RBI single to give the Sox some breathing room that they would end up needing. Sox 5-2.
The Sox pitching was pretty good all in all. Doubront was cruising through the first couple innings. In the 3rd, he had his first hiccup. Upton reaches on catcher interference instead of it being out #3. Doubront then hit Luke Scott. Adrian Gonzalez was hit in the 1st inning by Matt Moore and many considered Scott being hit to be retaliation. If you are going to hit any member of the Rays, Luke Scott is definitely the best choice. Keppinger hit an RBI single to give the Rays their first run of the day. Doubront threw over 30 pitches in the 4th inning and gave up an RBI single to rookie Thompson. The Rays had a rally going on until Luke Scott ended up lining out to end the inning. Doubront was kept into the game until the 6th inning with two outs, when Bobby V pulled him and Rich Hill was in the game. Doubront’s line for the night was 97 pitches, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 Ks.
Bobby V then had a different pitcher for the next 4 batters. Rich Hill came in and got Luke Scott out. Out of the game. Scott Atchison came in and got Keppinger out. Out of the game. Andrew Miller came in and got Carlos Pena out. Out of the game. Vicente Padilla came in and got Rodriguez out. Padilla would pitch for 2 outs of the 8th as well, however with two men on, Bobby V would go get Alfredo Aceves and ask him to get a 4 out save. Aceves gave up an RBI single to Upton. Sox 5-3. However, that would be all the Rays could get going against Aceves. Aces had a nice 1-2-3 9th inning and the Red Sox went back to their winning ways. This was the first 4 out save for Aceves and his 8th save of the season.
