Just when the Redskins return to the style of play – power running – that got them to the playoffs last year, the team announced the center Casey Rabach and tackle Jon Jansen are questionable for the Saints game. They are the only two players listed on this weeks injury report.
Tackle Todd Wade is listed as Jansen’s back-up. If Rabach, who broke his hand last week, can’t go, Mike Pucillo would step in his place. Pucillo, who wears number 62, has seen action in recent weeks as an extra blocker on running plays. In the Redskins motion schemes, Pucillo would line up as the fullback, then shift to the right or left side of the line, often signaling the direction of the run.
“Sixty-two eligible” has been a frequent announcement by the game officials as Pucillo reported on to the field for a play. Fifty-one percent of everything that happens in football originates on the line. How Joe Bugel and Al Saunders cope with tackle-eligible blocking schemes are part of the game between the games. Ladell Betts hopes they get it right.
