Downey Named Finalist For Oscar Robertson Trophy

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the Univ of South Carolina announced recently that USC senior point guard Devan Downey is one of 16 finalists for the 2010 Oscar Robertson Trophy, to be presented to the association’s national player of the year.

This comes after Downey has made the cut for the Bob Cousy Award also….which you need to go to – Vote for Devan Downey for Bob Cousy Award – and vote.

Downey leads the SEC and ranks fourth in the nation in points per game with an impressive 22.8 per outing.  Devan Downey’s 2.9 steals per game lead the league and rank third in the nation (as of Feb. 15 NCAA stats).  Downey has tallied 1,750 points as a Gamecock, which ranks fourth all-time in South Carolina history.  He surpassed Jimmy Foster (1,745) for fourth in scoring all-time with his 18 points at Georgia. Downey has scored 30 or more points in four of the last six games, and has tallied 30 or more in five of 10 SEC contests this season.  Heneeds just 12 steals to surpass Chuck Eidson (272) for the Gamecock record for career steals.

So will he win this award?  Is Devan the best player in college basketball this year?
