MENDENHALL CENTER, LAS VEGAS, NV — Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green “spilled the beans” a bit in July when, at his contract extension press conference, he told reporters that he was working on his post-up game this summer.
“In the playoffs I went to the post a little more, but it was still just ‘bully-ball’, like just trying to bully whoever was right there to get to the rim,” Green said that day.
Green also had disclosed another secret weapon he’s working on: “An ‘in-between’ game. I think my floater got better. It can continue to improve, whether it’s taking one dribble and pulling up instead of trying to get all the way to the rim and shoot over (Timofey) Mozgov.”
At the USA Basketball Men’s National Team workouts earlier this month, Green wouldn’t expand much further.
“I can’t give it all away,” Green told LetsGoWarriors. “I gave one or two things away. I can’t give it all away. Gotta be somewhat of a surprise!”
Just a year ago, his improvement on ball-handling was a closely guarded secret until he busted some moves out at a Pro-Am game in Saginaw, MI, last summer.
Asked if the process of adding a new post-up move here or there involves emulating any other player’s repertoire, Green replied, “You watch and take what you can take, but how many good post-up players have my size against the guys who I’m going against? Probably not many, because there’s not many guys my size playing the position I play.
“So you look at a Paul Millsap maybe, but at the end of the day, you gotta find what works for you,” Green added. “Just trying to get a couple moves in my arsenal.”
