So far this year we've already counted down with two specialists, because the Badgers are cool like that and have amazingly high numbers for their punters and kickers. Heck, the person most famous for wearing No. 94 is former punter Ken DeBauche.
Today we celebrate Drew Meyer to Badger football kickoff. That means we're just 90 days away from all the wonderful sights, smells, food, beverages and awesomeness that surrounds Camp Randall on gameday. One of the key components and one of the more surprising performances of last season came from Meyer. He did more than expected after a shaky spring game where he put a lot of pressure on himself to replace the departed NFL draft pick, Brad Nortman.
So let's explore more of what he brings to the table entering his second season as the punter at UW.
Story So Far:
– 2012 was just Meyer's redshirt freshman season, yet he earned consensus Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, averaging 41.5 yards per punt.
– Meyer finished 6th in average last season, but will enter 2013 4th best in average thanks to Brett Maher's graduation & Michigan's Will Hagerup being suspended for the entire 2013 season.
– 36 of his 80 punts last season were inside the 20.
History of No. 90 at Wisconsin:
Erasmus James (2001-02, 2004): James was one of the most feared defensive ends in the Big Ten by the time he was done at the UW. After missing the 2003 season due to injury James came back and recorded his career high in tackles for loss with 11.5 in 2004. He was a consensus 1st team All-American pick in 2004 as well.
Donn Voss (1951-52): Old school fans should know the term "Hard Rock" and Voss was a member of that famed defensive unit in '52 (btw… just a quick suggestion to you younger fans out there – learn your history, there's a lot there to be proud of). That defense helped lead the Badgers to a Big Ten championship and was named an All-American that season as well. He also ran track at UW.
