If it walks like a Duck and quacks like a duck and wears green and gold, or gold, silver, chrome, or black, it’s probably a Duck. Hard to tell these days what color the unis are going to be, but the teams are fun to watch. Basketball season is upon us! Four months until March Madness begins to sweep the land!
If your heart bleeds for Mariota and the guys who play on grass, shouldn’t it also bleed for women’s basketball too, or the men’s hoops team that made the sweet 16 last season? The ladies are 2-0 so far in non-conference play, while the men are ranked 19th and 1-0 after beating Georgetown in a game played in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.
The Hoyas made a game of it on the neutral court at Camp Humphreys , the Armed Forces Classic game played to honor the men and women of the US military on Memorial Day. The players wore camouflage unis and the coaches wore combat boots. Oregon wore out the Hoyas in the second half, coming away with an 82-75 victory over the perennial favorite of the Big East league. The Hoyas led twice against the Ducks, who were playing without a couple of sophomore starters who were suspended by the team for a total of nine games each.
Who says women can’t drive?
Last Saturday, the Oregon women’s basketball team put up 131 points on Cal State Bakersfield in a light’s out night that set quite a few records for the Oregon program and the Pac-12.
She’s got the latest dish: Point guard Chrisha Rowe wheels and deals with that Nike basketball in a recent exhibition game against Oregon Tech. Rowe had 35 points and 15 rebounds in a 116-51 victory (Michael Shaw, Oregon Daily Emerald photo).
The lady Ducks knocked down 20 treys in a barn burner that saw Oregon leading by 51 with 5:24 left in the game, 124-73. Katelyn Loper, a 5’11” guard from Post Falls Idaho, scored 29 as a starter, going 9-15 from the three point stripe. Megan Carpenter pumped in 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Collectively, they scored 51 points off of breakaways.
On Tuesday night, they scorched Portland for 113, allowing the Pilots just 36 points in the first half. Marcus Mariota, eat your heart out.
In about a week, the Lady Ducks face #1 Connecticut on the road, a challenging opponent for the unranked Oregon squad. The game can be seen on the Pac-12 Network on November 20th at 4pm.
