Brandon Bair, Isaac Remington, Rahsaan Vaughan, and Mark Asper were released by their NFL teams on Tuesday as teams prepare to reduce rosters to the 53-man limit by Saturday.

Currently Chip Kelly and the Eagles have 76 players on the roster, so the coach will have to make 23 difficult decisions by Saturday, which might also include former Ducks Jeff Maehl, Will Murphy and Dennis Dixon.

On Monday the 49’ers released former Boise State tailback D.J. Harper, increasing the chances that LaMichael James might survive despite a lackluster preseason. The St. Louis Rams waived quarterback Tim Jenkins, so Kellen Clemens’ roster spot as #3 qb appears safe for now.

Thursday the NFL has a full round of exhibition games, and most teams will leave their starters on the bench with the regular season just a week away, devoting the game to taking a final look at players who are on the bubble. It’s a last chance to stick or earn a more meaningful role on the team. Casey Matthews of the Eagles, who had four tackles and a sack this weekend, is one of those players after two seasons in the league. He was a fourth round draft pick when he came out in 2011. He had 24 tackles as a rookie but just four last season.
