Rahsaan Vaughn, a smooth JC transfer from College of San Mateo who had only flashes as a Duck, signed a free agent contract today with the New York Jets.
Vaughn was the number-one rated JC receiver in the country in 2010, catching over 60 passes in a run-first offense for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. He caught only 21 passes for 259 yards and two tds at Oregon while appearing in 26 games. To his credit, he never complained about his diminished role, improving his blocking and distinguishing himself as a hard worker in practice.

The 6-2, 200-lb. wide receiver made a lot of big plays in practice, especially during fall camp in 2011. Fans had high hopes for him, hopes that were heightened when he grabbed a 46-yard post pattern in the second game of the year that season against Missouri State with a defender draped all over him. It turned out to be the longest catch of his two-year stint as a Duck.
In Friday’s 26-17 loss to Detroit, former Seahawk Ben Oboman was the Jets’ leading receiver with 4 catches for 59 yards. Clyde Gates, with 18 career NFL catches, was next with 3 grabs for 39 yards. Mark Sanchez needs some targets in a pedestrian offense, so Vaughn has at least an opportunity to stick and play some more football.
NFL teams have until August 31 to evaluate their expanded rosters. On that date they have to reduce their squads to 53 players. The league’s regular season begins on September 5th.
In other transaction news, Byron “Smash” Marshall’s older brother Cameron Marshall, the former leading rusher for the Arizona State Sun Devils, was cut by the Miami Dolphins.
