NFL waiver wires are beginning to hum as teams move toward Saturday night’s 53-man roster deadline, but so far the bulk of former Oregon Ducks are hanging on to their thin lifeline in the not-for-long league.
Yesterday the 49’ers placed South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore on the Non-football Injury List, a day after waiving former Boise State Bronco D.J. Harper, giving LaMichael James a little more breathing room on the depth chart.

Carolina placed 5-year NFL veteran Jonathan Stewart on the Physically Unable to Perform List. J-Stew has an injured right ankle that has kept him out of drills. He continues to rehab, clearing more carries for Panther reserve running back Kenjon Barner. Stewart is expected to be out for at least five games, including the team’s regular season bye week in week four.
John Boyett remains on the Non-football Injury List at Indianapolis, a move that indicates the team wants to keep the player under contract and work toward rehabilitating the inury.
Thursday night is the last round of exhibition games in the league, a full slate with every team in action. None of the games are scheduled for live national TV. Most teams will sit their veterans in preseason Week 4, taking an extensive look at reserves and players on the bubble before Saturday’s cutdown deadline.
The NFL regular season begins Thursday September 5 with Baltimore traveling to Denver. Tight end Ed Dickson and nose tackle Haloti Ngata are expected to start for the Ravens.
