EA Sports: MMA Review

There was much anticipation when EA Sports announced that they were producing a mixed martial arts video game.  Considering the company pretty much has a lock on the sports video game market, their first forray in to MMA was eagerly awaited.  Then THQ dropped the amazing UFC Undisputed 2010 and the odds were raised – can EA top UFC Undisputed?  Well, after a long wait EA Sports: MMA has been released.  So, is it better than Undisputed?  No, not quite – but it was a close fight – it went to the judge’s decision.

Despite losing the fight with UFC Undisputed, there is still plenty to like about this game.  The most obvious is the inclusion of fighters like Fedor Emelianenko and Randy Couture, as well as Bas Rutten being your personal trainer in the career mode.  In fact, the career mode of the game is probably superior to the one in UFC Undisputed, with your created fighter training with Rutten or travelling to Couture or several other legendary trainers’ gyms to work on new moves.  The training aspect is definitely better than Undisputed’s – it is far less boring and tedious.  Another superior aspect to the game is it’s controls for doing submission holds.  While in Undisputed it can be next to impossible to apply a successful submission, EA Sports: MMA has far easier controls for it, with the user rotating his controller’s joystick to try to find the “sweet spot” to lock on the hold.  It also seems to be easier to pull off “flash knockouts” than in Undisputed, which makes it feel more realistic – all it takes is one punch/knee/kick to knock a person out in the cage/ring in real life, so the simulatedvideo game world should be the same.  But the biggest reason you should purchase this game is because Fedor’s tremendously awesome entrance music is in it – that makes any game a must-buy.  Oh, that and the fact that you can do something in the game that will never occur in the real world – have Fedor fight Couture.
