The deal is officially done, and one of the top tackles in the NFL is staying in Philly. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Philadelphia Eagles and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox have agreed to a six-year, $103 million extension. The deal includes $63 million guaranteed.
Although Cox was not set to become a free-agent until after the 2017 season, his production warranted the Eagles to get a deal done as soon as possible before other suitors could surface next April.
Contract negotiations between Cox and the Eagles have been the talk of Philadelphia since the conclusion of the 2015 season, and saw some stalls along the way. The slow-moving negotiations led Cox to skip out on voluntary team workouts before he ultimately reported for mandatory workouts last week.
In 2016, Cox racked up 71 total tackles and 9.5 sacks. Now looking to transition to new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s 4-3 defense, Cox will be vital in the defensive switch.
The five-year pro took to his Twitter to thank Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the Eagles organization after the deal was officially announced.
Now that the weight of their negotiations has been lifted, Cox and the Eagles can enjoy individual summer workouts before late July’s kickoff of 2016’s training camp.
