Another chip has fallen within the Eagles defense and that is Jim Washburn. This morning, the Philadelphia Eagles fired the defensive line coach after last night’s game versus the Dallas Cowboys. It would seem like this move had to be made as the Eagles defense did not help the offense yesterday.
There has been a drop off in sacks from this season and last. This season the defense only has 20 sacks compared to 50 sacks last season. 46 of those 50 sacks came from the defensive line and out of those 46 sacks, Jason Babin had 18.
With Washburn gone so is the wide nine scheme that he used for the defensive line. In a statement released by the Eagles, Andy Reid said “However, I determined that it was in the team’s best interest that we move in a different direction in terms of trying to maximize the production of that position group. We look forward to having Tommy Brasher back on board to work with the defensive line.”
Yes, replacing Jim Washburn will be Tommy Brasher. Brasher coached the Eagles defensive line in 1985 and in 1999-2005. When Brasher was with the Birds back in 2002, they led the league in sacks with 56 and then in 2004 they were tied for second in sacks with 45.
According to a CSNPhilly.com article, when Brasher was the defensive line coach from 1999-2005, the Eagles finished in the top 10 in sacks five times.
