With the NFL tampering period running strong, teams and agents are inquiring about possible salary figures with free agency beginning on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Most deals will be structured today ahead of their announcement tomorrow. The Eagles are expected to be a team who makes a push for some upper level talent as they have reportedly shown interest in Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson.
Johnson, who turned 27 this past February, excelled as a 4-3 defensive end for Mike Zimmer and the Bengals but is receiving multiple looks as a 3-4 outside linebacker after dropping back into coverage more than 30 times last season. While he is expected to come with a hefty price tag, he’s rated as the top edge rusher in free agency, the Eagles realize linebacker help is needed and they may have to make a larger contribution than they are used to address the position.
While a reunion between Johnson and his former defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer in Minnesota seems like a match made in heaven, we will keep an eye on this story and see how it develops.
