This offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have made it an effort to lock up their guys to long-term deals. Last week, the Eagles’ brass signed tight ends Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, and offensive lineman Lane Johnson to long-term extensions. On Tuesday, the Eagles made sure to take care of defensive end Vinny Curry.
According to the NFL Network’s Albert Breer, the Eagles and Vinny Curry agreed to a five-year deal worth $47.25 million with $23 million guaranteed. When the Eagles made Jim Schwartz their new defensive coordinator this offseason, everybody knew that re-signing Curry was a huge key as the Eagles defense would be transitioning back to the 4-3.
This season, Curry only had 12 total tackles and 3.5 sacks after coming off of a great 2014 season, where he had 9.5 sacks being a pass rushing specialist in Billy Davis’ 3-4 defensive scheme.
It will be interesting to see how Schwartz uses Curry in the 4-3 but this move could have ramifications down the line. With Curry receiving almost $50 million, you have to think that another move is coming because you do not pay a backup defensive lineman that much money.
In case you missed it, earlier today, Jalil Phillips wrote about the defensive free agents the Eagles need to target and Curry was first on his list.
