After two seasons, the Cary Williams experience is now over as today, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that they have released the 30-year-old cornerback.
Williams’ play on the field was overshadowed by his antics when speaking to the media and saying anything that comes to his mind. Also his play on the field definitely did not help the bulls-eye on his back as he was called for numerous defensive penalties.
Per Pro Football Reference, Williams was penalized eight times this past season as three of those eight penalties were for defensive holding.
In his two seasons with the Eagles, he never missed a game as he had five interceptions and 22 pass deflections. With Williams’ departure, it signifies that the Eagles will be either adding a cornerback in the draft or free agency. It most likely seems that they will add a corner in free agency as Seattle Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell has been linked to them.
Also with the Eagles releasing Williams, they save $6.5 million in cap space as he was going into the final year of his three-year, $17 million deal.
Finally, after his release, Williams got a chance to speak his mind on Philadelphia’s FM sports station 97.5 The Fanatic. He said that the team did not give him a chance to take a pay-cut or come back.
Sadly, that is the name of this game around this time of the year in the NFL. Williams will not be out of work for long as he will have suitors for his services.
