Offensive lineman Evan Mathis has all but confirmed via his Twitter that his time in Philadelphia is now over. This afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to part ways with the Pro Bowl guard following the team’s OTAs.
Mathis spent the last four seasons in Philadelphia, and was selected to the 2013 and 2014 Pro Bowls. At the start of OTAs, it was reported that Mathis would hold out, seeking a new deal. His hold-out was expected to continue through mandatory practices.
Mathis has also been the subject of many trade rumors, namely those suspected to be a part of head coach Chip Kelly’s failed attempt at gaining the number one pick in the 2015 NFL draft to take Marcus Mariota.
Mathis’s latest deal was a five-year, $25.5M contract signed in the 2012 off-season. Now that Mathis is no longer an Eagle, many suitors will surely go after the former All-Pro. Whether he will satisfy his desired price tag is a different story.
With Kelly now at the helm of the organization, many see this as an example of his refusal to tolerate disruption. Only one question remains: how will the Eagles move on and replace Mathis’s production this off-season?
