After getting rid of the contracts of cornerback Byron Maxwell and running back DeMarco Murray on Monday. The Philadelphia Eagles now have enough cap space to address needs on both sides of the ball. One of the positions, the Eagles needed to address this offseason was offensive line as the offensive guard play was poor to say the least.
The Eagles have addressed the position as according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, they have signed former Houston Texans offensive guard Brandon Brooks to a five-year, $40 million deal. Brooks, the 6-foot-5, 343 lb. offensive guard, has started in 44 out 50 games over his three-year career.
The Miami (OH) product was a top 10 offensive guard in 2013 and 2014 according to Pro Football Focus, but took a significant dip in 2015.
Brandon Brooks rank by year per @PFF:
2013 – 7th best
2014 – 8th best
2015 – 34th best— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) March 9, 2016
That makes sense as the Houston Texans offensive line was not very good in 2015, according to Football Outsiders. Football Outsiders has the Texans offensive line ranked 17th in pass blocking giving up 36 sacks with an adjusted sack rate of 6.3 percent. Then when it comes to run blocking, the Texans offensive line was ranked 18th with 3.73 adjusted line yards and ranked 25th overall in second level yards with 1.02.
Brooks is a young offensive lineman with potential that is good in pass protection and an upgrade over what the Eagles had there in 2015 with Matt Tobin and Dennis Kelly.
