In his press conference following Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced two roster moves. The team decided to release cornerback Aaron Grymes, who was recently brought up to the active roster to add depth, and sign wide receiver Paul Turner to the active roster.
While Grymes’s release comes with little cost, the decision to sign Turner will garner much talk from Eagles fans.
In yesterday’s loss, highly-criticized receiver Nelson Agholor once again stood out as once of the team’s biggest disappointments. On a potential touchdown play which saw tight end Zach Ertz race up the field into the end zone, Agholor left Seattle’s left tackle uncovered, resulting in an illegal formation penalty, and the touchdown being wiped off the board.
Following the play wide receiver coach Greg Lewis gave Agholor an earful after costing the Eagles six points. On the very next play, the second-year pro let a wide open pass from quarterback Carson Wentz sail right through his hands.
The addition of Turner could be a sign that the Eagles are looking elsewhere for the receiving threat Agholor had hoped to be. Turner was a clear standout for the Eagles during the preseason, both on offense, as well as with handling punt returns. He took a punt 71 yards for a score in the Eagles preseason win over the New York Jets.
Turner could once again see significant time in the return game as running back and primary punt returner Darren Sproles went down in yesterday’s game with an apparent rib injury.
With the addition of both Bryce Treggs and Turner within recent weeks’ the Eagles are showing more and more that the faith in their current receiving corps is quickly dwindling.
