Michael Vick is number three on the countdown of the Philadelphia Eagles top 15 impact players for next season. While there has been an intense battle for the starting gig, Vick has pulled away from Nick Foles and has been named the starter. While he was expected to get the nod due to his compatibility with Chip Kelly’s offense, the battle with Foles was considered to be fairly competitive.
Michael Vick may have held off Nick Foles, but can he perform as a starter? I say yes. However, there are some legitimate questions surrounding him. The first question is can Micael Vick stay healthy? Vick has played in just 23 games over the last two years, and is an injury risk every time out. His gutsy play is defiantly appreciated by fans, but he needs to be smarter about throwing his body all over the field. The next question is can Michael Vick limit his turnovers. In the last two seasons, he has thrown 24 interceptions. He has struggled to make the right decisions at times, but hopefully he has learned to be smarter with the football.
After being named the starting quarterback, Vick said this.
“I think I proved I could be consistent every day and be a leader on this team, I’m going to take the same approach, the same mindset. I know how hard I worked over the last four months. It would be a shame if I let up. It would be selfish, to myself and my teammates.”
Going into next season, Mike Vick is in a perfect position. It is no secret that Chip Kelly loves using mobile quarterbacks which is exactly why he is the ideal fit. The offense will be built around running the ball for both the running backs and Vick. Over his career Vick has been incredibly affective with his legs, and currently has the most rushing yards by any quarterback. With an offense now completely designed for his type of play, who knows what he could do this year. As of late, Michael Vick has expressed how he feels the best he ever has, and we have certainly seen that this pre-season. He has been very efficient so far, and the hope is that he can carry his terrific play over to the regular season. All signs point to Michael Vick having a bounce back season, and him having one of the best of his career. Look for him to be one of the Eagles top 3 performers, and be the leader of the new exciting offense.
