After head coach Doug Pederson declared that Sam Bradford would be the Eagles starting quarterback heading into the season with Chase Daniel backing him up, it became almost certain that Mark Sanchez would be on his way out.
This afternoon, Denver Broncos EVP of Football Operations John Elway announced via Twitter that the Broncos acquired Sanchez from the Eagles for a conditional 2017 draft pick.
Sanchez signed with the Eagles in 2014 after sitting out the entire previous season with a shoulder injury. In his season debut with the Eagles, he threw for 202 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks in a 31-21 win over the Houston Texans.
That year, Sanchez eventually took over as the Eagles starter following the loss of Nick Foles to injury, throwing for 2,418 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Sanchez would sign a two-year, $16 million deal to return to the Eagles for 2015, making him among the highest paid backup quarterbacks in the league.
Sanchez would again see regular season action in the 2015 season, stepping in for an injured Bradford. Unfortunately, he started in two of the worse losses of the season, the 45-17 and 45-14 losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions respectively.
Many speculated that Sanchez would have little to no trade value at this point in his career. After it was realized that he would not be cut before the new league year, and that the Eagles were bringing on Daniel, speculation became greater in terms of whether he would be the Eagles backup to Daniel with Bradford going elsewhere. Now we all know that the Eagles held on to him to possibly sneak in an extra pick in next year’s draft.
The Broncos are one of the teams who are currently trying to figure out their quarterback situation with Peyton Manning retiring and Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans. Although they now have Sanchez, they are still likely on the hunt for a number one guy.
