The early NFL free agency/trade/signing returns are coming in, and the smart Philly phans who come here to comment are actually the ones doing the live reporting tonight…
So far the Eagles have been very quiet, waiting it seems to find a real value… the money numbers for some guys so far have been crazy (Pierre Garcon to the Redskins for 5 years at $45 million, for example). In fact, it looks like the Eagles will be content to extend some of their own veterans (as they did OL Todd Herremans today, signing him through 2016), then focus on their college drafting strategy. They may wait until after the Draft to pull the trigger on free agent spending. But a surprise acquisition could be pending, and if it happens tonight, you’ll hear it from the Livefyre gallery here.
At least we’re having fun. I’m playing along with a little adult-beverage scoring game whereby a modest swig is taken for every time the Garcon acquisition by the Redskins is denounced as a horrible inflationary mistake by Washington. I better pace myself or it could turn into hammer-time…
Here’s a quick update of the action so far prior to the posting of this table-setting blurb:
WR Brandon Marshall (shown here before his Dolphins days) was traded from Miami to the Chicago Bears for two 3rd rounders… a great deal for the Bears, who really needed a big wideout presence for Jay Cutler’s passing game. Marshall caught 81 passes for 1214 yards and 6 TD’s last season in Miami.
BEST DEAL OF THE DAY SO FAR:
Brandon Marshall has been traded to the Chicago Bears for two third-round picks. Chicago has plenty of room under the salary cap to handle Marshall’s contract, and this deal makes a ton of sense from the Bears’ perspective. First off, it eliminates Chicago’s biggest need: Marshall is a true No. 1 wide receiver and he gives Cutler the big body that this passing attack has desperately needed. I guess this move also could signal Miami is out of the running for Peyton Manning… or does it clear salary cap space for bringing in Manning’s favorite Colts receiver Reggie Wayne and other familiar targets? I’m not sure… makes no sense to me from the Miami perspective other than to commit to riding out a rough season and rebuilding through the Draft.
WORST DEAL OF THE DAY SO FAR:
Pierre Garcon signs as WR with the Redskins for 5 years at $45 million, $21 million guaranteed…really?
