Ed Sedar Leaving Milwaukee

While the Brewers are bringing Dale Sveum and Rick Peterson back next season, at least one member of the 2010 coaching staff won’t be returning.

The Houston Astros issued a press release announcing that Ed Sedar has been named Minor League Outfield/Baserunning Instructor.  Sedar has been with the Brewers in some capacity since 1992, and was the Brewers’ first base coach for the past four seasons. 

Sedar was also in charge of coaching the outfielders and baserunning in Milwaukee, and while he always seemed to be a player (and fan) favorite, it’s hard to tell if his coaching had much of an effect.  Outfield defense has always been an issue the past few years, but how much of that was his coaching, and how much of it was just a group bad outfielders being bad?  The baserunning is also hard to evaluate considering the style with which Ken Macha managed the team the past two seasons.  If Sedar was working wonders with the Brewers’ baserunning, we wouldn’t have been able to tell with Macha’s approach.

So what exactly did the Brewers lose?  By all accounts, a great guy who’s been extremely loyal to the organization.  But it’s clear that the new manager — whoever he may be — doesn’t have him in his plans, and that’s fine.  It’s good to see Sedar get a chance somewhere else, though, even if it means less entertaining post-game interviews.
