Edwin gets jacked up, son; Tigers division lead is one

I’m not usually one for many words after a game like this.  8-0 loss.  Poor hitting, poor pitching, poor everything. I could end the post right there.  Don’t worry, I won’t.
I guess we should have expected this type of game considering how bad Jackson has been lately and how good of a pitcher Peavy is all the time.  Seeing zero as a product of Peavy plus the Tigers consistent hitting problems makes complete sense given further thought.
Across the way, unfortunately for the Tigers, the Royals rolled over and played dead for the Twins in the first four innings (fell behind 10-0) and that was all the Twins needed to pull within one game of Detroit with just two games remaining.

Random thoughts:
  • The game can never have a really good feeling when Scott Podsednik leads the game off with a home run that resembles that of a Jim Thome homer.  However, for me, any positive feelings went out the window when Tim Tschida, the homeplate umpire, missed a strike three call on Jermaine Dye in the 4th inning and then he “doubled” in a run to left.  The “double” was the ball Carlos Guillen slid about two days early on, had a cup of coffee, and then didn’t make a catch.  Sure, it only made the game 2-0 at that point, obviously well within reach, but when those type of things happen it almost always means trouble.  Sure enough, the White Sox scored six more and won 8-0.  Maybe I’m overreacting about that sequence of events because that was right around the time the Twins took a lead on the Royals in the first inning.  (Below is the screen shot of the pitches in the Dye at bat — the “should have been strike three” is highlighted in yellow.)

  • If the Tigers make the playoffs, I’d much rather see Rick Porcello start before Edwin Jackson.
  • Gerald Laird looks like John Turturro. John Mapplethorpe figured it out long before I did, but I just realized it tonight. Shame on me.
  • For young guys who have a combined ERA of about 6.5, Clay Rapada and Casey Fien looked pretty good.  Aside from Fien allowing all of Jackson’s inherited runners, they both pitched well.  4 IP, 2 hits, and 2 strikeouts with zero walks.  Not bad for garbo time.
  • A.J. Pierzynski is still a douchebag.
  • I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Tigers have only won two games on the ESPN network in the past three years.  I don’t know the exact record and I don’t know how many times exactly we’ve played on the network, but I can only remember two wins, both coming this season.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but either way, the record HAS to be awful.
  • Live blog tomorrow night.  Greinke and Alfredo will make things right.

GO TIGERS!
