The future of Penn State’s quarterback position looks to be pretty solid. Not only does Christian Hackenberg, 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, have three years of eligibility remaining, but Class of 2015 commit Brandon Wimbush continues to raise the bar for his own hype. Wimbush is in Beaverton, Oregon at the Nike headquarters for the prestigious Elite 11 camp and he has been putting on quite the show according to those taking notes.

Barton Simmons of 247 Sports singled out Wimbush as the “alpha dog” in a recent roundup update from the event. Simmons said Wimbush has been “outstanding,” and said it was more than Wimbush’s arm strength that has been impressive.

“Wimbush showcased great feet in a pocket chaos drill, he made the right reads in his progression drills and he was accurate,” SImmons wrote. “If he can translate his Sunday morning session to the 7on7 drills, Wimbush will be a favorite to win the entire event.”

Wimbush also was the master of what Simmons called the signature play of Sunday’s action. Check out this quick video of Wimbush dropping back and shaking off pressure from the edge before throwing a bullet to the corner.

Wimbush’s praise is not just coming from the recruiting analysts and scouts. It is also coming from those focused on some of Penn State’s rivals. Eleven Warriors was keeping tabs on some former Ohio State recruiting targets and came away most impressed with Wimbush.

“There may not be a more complete quarterback in the country and this morning the 6-foot-2, 205 pounder had the look and the performance of a player out to prove just that,” Jeremy Birmingham wrote on Eleven Warriors. “James Franklin‘s biggest catch of his inaugural class at Penn State, Wimbush has a powerful right arm, excellent feet and above all else, he listens to instruction and immediately makes corrections.”

Hackenberg also put on quite the display when he attended the Elite 11 event in 2012. After getting off to a slow start, Hackenberg tied for second in the event with USC quarterback Max Brown. UCLA quarterback Asiantii Woulard took top honors in the 2012 Elite 11. Hackenberg could have benefitted from better decision-making over the middle according to ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill.

Wimbush committed to Penn State on May 6. He accepted an invitation to play in the 2015 Under Armour All-American Game. He will continue to work through this week’s The Opening at Nike’s base as well.
