The Red Sox needed a spark, anything that would show they were not the team that lost ten of their last twelve and had seen their wild card lead drop to just a game and a half. After losing the first half of a double header to the Orioles and giving back most of a big lead in the second game of the twin bill, Jacoby stepped up to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the Sox. He drove one towards the triangle and galloped out of the box all the way around the bases. He beat the throw to home by a step and did not even have to slide. The inside-the-park homer was the first of his career and opened the flood gates for the Red Sox; the next 6 batters went single, single, single, walk, single, grand slam.
Ells’ homer could be seen as important a spark as when Tek shoved A-Rod in the face in 2004 when the Red Sox go deep into the playoffs.
