Tim Wakefield just celebrated his 45th Birthday and he had hoped to give himself a present of notching his 200th career win. Unfortunately for Wake, he’ll have to wait for another day to get win #200, but he pitched well and left the game with us having a chance to win.
The Sox gave Wake a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning when Ortiz hit a 2 RBI single to score Gonzo and Youk. In the 4th, Wake allowed two runs to tie the game when he gave up a solo HR to Kipnis and then a double to Hafner. The Sox would give Wake the lead right back in the bottom of the 4th when Papi scored on a sac grounder RBI from Scutaro. Wake kept trucking along until the 7th inning when he got into a wee bit of trouble. Wake gave up a leadoff double to Chisenhall and then gave up a game tying RBI ground rule double to Carrera. Tito came out to get Wake and it was clear Wake wanted a chance to get that 3rd out and maybe still have a chance for a win. Wake’s line for the night was 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BBs and 6 Ks. Randy Williams came out in relief. He walked Kipnis and then struck out Cabrera to end the winning.
Williams had a nice 1-2-3 inning in the 8th and then Papelbon took the mound once again with the game tied in the 9th inning. Papelbon has continued his season of pitching dominance and had a 14 pitch 1-2-3 inning. The Sox would have to walk off again if they were going to have a chance to win this game. The inning didn’t start well with both DMac and Scutaro grounding out. However, the Amazing Ellsbury came to the plate next. He should now be known as the WALK OFF HERO. Ells hit a homerun to straight centerfield and was once again came to the plate to be mobbed by his teammates!
