The Killing and I have had an interesting relationship and it’s finally back for a surprising new season! I originally watched the first season after hearing about the up-roar from fans and media about the season finale. The season was devoted to searching for Rosie Larsen’s killer, and the season finale didn’t reveal the identity or provide any closure.
Because I knew the killer wouldn’t be revealed, I was excited about the second season and not upset about the first. I loved the second season’s suspense and surprises! The second finale was well worth the wait. The Killing is actually based on the Danish original series (Forbrydelsen), which was a huge international hit. I don’t know if that audience was upset, but they didn’t find out who the killer was until the end of the second season either.
After the US backlash from the first season and the reduced ratings of the second, AMC canceled the show. But much to my surprise, the writers came back with an original storyline and got the show picked up for a third season. I watched the two episode premiere and am happy to say that we still have the same great characters but have a new, interesting detective case.
Holder is back with his witty-street humor. Linden is happy, but quickly getting sucked back into the detective rabbit hole. It’ll be interesting to see if the precinct hires her back or if she just works on the side with her old partner Holder. The new and gruesome case is very similar to one that Linden worked on years ago and really messed with her mentally back then.
As far as new characters go, Peter Sarsgaard is a remarkable killer on death row who likes to play games. I’m not sure if he’s guilty or not, but I’m really excited to find out! I’m also interested to see how the homeless teens’ storylines develop. If they’re the killer’s target, the killer’s M.O. of choosing victims has changed from the past. I’m already sucked into the story and am excited to be along for the ride!
