Poor Eric Wedge. First in Cleveland he comes within a game of beating the 2007 Sox in the ALCS, then sees his team-including Cy Young winners CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee- be decimated and fade. Then the former Sox backup catcher (lifetime average:.233) goes to Seattle, a team with absolutely no hitting. After a pretty good first half, the Mariners suddenly lose 16 straight. Even shaving off his moustache didn’t help.
A year ago, fans were doubting Jacoby Ellsbury’s work ethic. Now he seems like the reincarnation of Rickey Henderson-.319 average, 16 homers, 58 rbi’s, 28 stolen bases. Some talk shows are saying that Ellsbury is “playing his way out of Boston.” Let’s hold on a bit. Isn’t it possible that he will be closer to a Henderson than anybody thought? Might not he deserve Rickey H money? I would hate to see him playing in New York.
By the way, 23 years ago, the Red Sox were in the midst of a 12-game winning streak after the All-Star Game. It followed the firing of John McNamara after an underachieving first half, and Joe Morgan taking over.
The Sox went on to tie a Major League Record with 24 straight home wins. They would go on to win two divisional titles under Joe. At the time it was called “Morgan Magic.”
