Sports Illustrated is reporting today that Eric Wedge will be the Mariners’ next manager. Which of course means that he won’t be the Pirates next manager, which means that all of us that thought he was a slam-dunk given the Indians’ connection were wrong. There will probably be some people that will react to this with hysterics (Neal Huntington can’t convince his friends to manage the Pirates because we’re DOOOOOOOOOOOMED!), but I’ve been kind of warming to the idea of hiring someone that hasn’t been fired by someone else already. Which is to say that I like Wedge, but I think Sveum and Banister are pretty good candidates, too, and I don’t think there would be anything wrong at all with hiring either one.
