ESPN doing 30 for 30 on 1994’s second best college football team

I do not love every “30 for 30” that comes through the pipeline at ESPN, but more often than not I seem to really dig their college football stories. According to a report from The Omaha World-Herald, there is a new one in the works about the second best team in the nation in 1994, the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Eric Drath, who’s directed several films for ESPN, including the 2013 “30 for 30” documentary “No Mas” told WOWT that ESPN is planning a film on the Huskers’ best-known squads: The 1994 team that overcame injuries and long odds to win Tom Osborne’s first national title; and the tumultuous 1995 team — perhaps the best in college football history — that dominated on the field while off-the-field incidents involving prominent players — including late former running back Lawrence Phillips — jabbed at the program’s reputation.

Of course, Nebraska goes in the record books at the recognized national champion from the 1994 season, despite Penn State also running the table with an undefeated season and a double-digit victory over Pac-10 champion Oregon. There is no question, you must admit, the Nebraska teams from 1994 and 1995 were pretty darn amazing and it was only a matter of time before ESPN gave those dominant teams a “30 for 30” look. I do not expect there to be much conversation involving Penn State, but it should be a part of the 1994 storytelling, I would think.

I still wonder what would have happened on the field had the BCS been put into play a few years earlier to allow Penn State a chance to go up against Tom Osborne’s first national championship team. Honestly, Nebraska did have an edge on defense, as this was not a particularly strong Penn State defense. Nebraska’s triple-option offense with Tommie Frazier and Lawrence Phillips doing their thing. I still contend, however, Penn State’s offense could have not only kept pace but perhaps set the pace with its offense. Kerry Collins, Ki-Jana Carter, Bobby Engram and Kyle Brady were a well-oiled machine that season. Who knows?
