Ethan Westbrooks, Whom LA Rams Kept Over Michael Sam, Arrested

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams

<![CDATA[Ethan Westbrooks, whose biggest claim to fame had been the defensive lineman the Los Angeles Rams chose to keep over Michael Sam in 2014, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of domestic violence.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the 26-year-old Westbrooks became involved in a custody dispute of a juvenile child, per a Sacramento Police Dept. news release.

“We are aware of the serious allegations involving Ethan Westbrooks,” the Rams said in a statement Monday night, as reported by the Times. “We are in contact with authorities and are gathering more information. Per team policy, we will continue to respect the legal process and have no further comment at this time.”

The news release stated that police were called to a woman’s home following a 9:06 p.m. phone call. Officers arriving on the scene “observed that a woman had suffered upper-body injuries, the release said,” according to the Times. “The officers investigated and determined that the woman had been injured during a domestic violence incident involving the father of her child.”

The police found Westbrooks at another residence and arrested him, the release added.

The Rams signed Westbrooks as an undrafted rookie free agent out of West Texas A&M in 2014, the same year the team drafted Sam in the seventh round. Sam announced he was gay in February of 2014 and drew considerable attention during the NFL Draft process.

The Rams, then in St. Louis, eventually cut Sam and kept Westbrooks, a move that drew scrutiny.

In three seasons, Westbrooks has 48 career tackles in 35 games. He had two starts in 2016 and returned one fumble 77 yards for a touchdown.]]>
